Tenugo and more news

Hi all. Well, the reception of Tenugo has been pretty encouraging to say the least and I am now more devoted than ever to bringing more of his adventures to you all post-haste!

As I posted before, the artist that drew the Rendezvous arc of Tenugo had some stuff to attend to and so wouldn’t have been available to draw the next arc of Ten-Ten. However, I have been able to find a solution and you will be getting some new Tenugo (if all goes well) by the first or second week of August.

Peter will be back to resume duties on Tenugo after that so don’t miss him too much :-) , I am sure you will like this new artist’s take on the character and his world. In fact, you might have gotten a sneak peek already!

In other news, I am already working on two more (yes, 2!) web comics and might be getting a few more from other writers as well. Don’t expect them too soon though. I am hoping to get some of them up and running in one or two months. Do look out for them.

As they get closer to release I will probably put up some character design sketches and so on for you guys to have a look at and leave your comments on.

The NCBS is still puttering away in the background, so do not think that I have forgotten about it, and story submissions and art are still coming in, so I think that the extra time it is taking to be ready will be a good thing for you guys and gals out there reading this blog. More stories to choose from can only be a good thing!

So in summary, more Tenugo sooner than I had dared hope, quite a few more web comic titles  to look forward to and the NCBS still collecting material.

So, hopefully you can see the first issue of Tenugo at the top of the website? What do you think? Well, we have the next issue for you on Friday so you don’t have to wait too long to find out what happens next. Do leave your comments and let us know what you think, good or bad.

I am currently working on writing the script for Tenugo for at least the next couple of months so as long as the art keeps up, you should have an uniterrupted stream of Tenugo on the blog.

In other news, I am still working on the NCBS, chasing up the various creators who have yet to submit their stories in. As soon as they come in, you will be the next to know via updates on the blog and in the gallery.

Work has also begun on the script I posted earlier for Killing Days. I should be able to give a very sneak peek into the character design process in a couple of days for your perusal. Stay tuned.

Story Summary Six: Pilot by Yegwa Ukpo

About fifty years in the future, a Nigerian archaeological team unwittingly triggers a series of events that could bring about the destruction of all life on the planet. There is only one thing that can stop this from happening, the Rio. A highy advanced piece of weaponry that can only be piloted by the first human it interfaces with. In addition to this, a messenger from another alien race, called the Heuriso offer to aid humanity with their advanced science and what little knowledge they have of the Trials that we have unwittingly unleashed on ourselves.

Cue lots of political wrangling, fears, and various intrigues and problems await the hero Joseph as he bears the fate of the world on his shoulders while also keeping tabs on what the American and other countries’ governments are doing.

The FAMILY is a syndicate made up of high-ranking citizens and industrial top-shots, each of them holding no political office nor having any political ambition. But, they dictate how Nigeria is run. What decisions are made, who becomes the governor of which state etc.

The FAMILY funded the BULLDOZER PROJECT, a secret off-shoot programme organised by the State Security Service. The BULLDOZER Project is a group of young, trained assassins used by the FAMILY to do its dirty jobs.

BLACK WIDOW is the code name of one of the assassins, Amaka, a young girl who was separated from her mother by Madam Z and drafted into the project. Trapped between a dark world of organised crimes, a blurry past and a deep yearning to discover her true identity, Amaka discharged her duties with razor-sharp skills and accurate precision. Interestingly, she found love at about the same time a ghost from her past came back to haunt her.

The story is set in Nigeria with a few events happening elsewhere.

Expect high octane action, guns blazing and swords slashing.

Story Summary Four: Canary Seven by Elfworks

The magical War Mask called Gomi has been stolen from its keeping place in the town of Arama by Kana and his band of mercenaries called the Slaves of Death and Ivali Ikimam, the 5th and youngest of the Arch 7eveners in the entire region, and his lieutenants have been summoned to go after them and retrieve the mask at any cost to prevent them from unleashing chaos in the region with it.

Meanwhile the Amadim Devils and the Ikpoma Flames middle teams are playing for the title in the final match of the year’s annual tournament. Due to the high stakes, the match becomes a virtual battle field as each team unleashes its most imaginative and brutal tactics in its bid to win.

Do note that this is the summary for the Nigerian Comic Book Showcase issue and not for the entire series.

Story Summary Three: easy.delicious by Bibi Green

easy.delicious is the graphic story of a group of girls who become a female rock band in Lagos, Nigeria.

They are:

Deedee Esene:

A funky, independent, hot tempered teen with a sharp mouth. She’s one of the band’s two co-founders. This mixed race cutie with the big brown afro plays bass guitar.

Eniola Bode-George:

A conservative, shy and sheltered teen with an amazing talent. The bespectacled girl is the opposite of the brash Deedee and the other cofounder of the band. She plays the violin, keyboards and synths.

Isi Ugoji:

The baby sister of one of the owners of up and coming Maximum Music Studios, she is a tomboy who loves music and is eager to prove her mettle. This punk loving teen is mellow with a sarcastic edge and a fierce Drummer.

Vicki Ajayi:

Beautiful, image conscious, arrogant and popular, she is Deedee’s mortal enemy. But even Deedee can’t deny that she has an amazing voice. With, her looks, voice, style and attitude, no one can fill out a spot light like Vicki. This rock style Beyonce is the band’s lead vocalist.

They came together to play the kind of music that they loved and to play it well.

Talent and hard work gets them fans but it’s luck that gets them some recognition and pretty soon, the four have to deal with what it means to be a teenage girl and a rock star in contemporary Lagos.

It’s a story about fashion, love, rock and the personal dramas of four special girls.

Abraham Akusu is finally there. At the dire straits plains, where all drivers compete in their 300th race on the circuit. Not many people get this far, and those who do, often don’t live to tell the tale, or simply disappear after the final course, the Pluton Volta. This is why on the Tekkon 800 world tournament circuit, the 300th is usually referred to as ‘The last race’. Abraham drives a junk train, and is the best junk train racer in the near galaxy. He is the only junk train driver to make it to the 300th, competing against craft a lot more advanced than one might like to compare it to. The odds are against him…but he is still in the race.

Story summary One: CELLS: Lagos Underground by Adeniyi Adeniji

CELLS: Lagos Underground

The story begins somewhere in the not too distant future, as the world recovers from a global economic recession of catastrophic proportions that saw even the United States (and several other countries) close their borders to the outside world and the inevitable result of a Third World War. Out of the ashes emerges The Paragon Corporation which is largely responsible for Africa’s survival as they move in and take over most of the Third world. Many years later, in what was once called Lagos; a movement is started by a group of youths, who fight against the changes forced upon them by “The Corporation”.

The story simply follows the adventures of a group of friends living in a futuristic world set against the backdrop of the West African City formerly known as Lagos. However, things are not always as they seem. While living in a technologically advanced (near utopian) society, the six friends must come to terms with what it means to be citizens of the post WWIII civilization, under the control of a mysterious secret organization.

Soldier: Is the son of one of their nation’s legendary war heroes who vanished some years back. Soldier believes the Corporation- or more importantly- the corporation’s secret arm has something to do with his father’s disappearance.

Telema: Is a child genius who is also Soldier’s closest friend.

Django Starr: Rockstar/Action movie star, Django is a public idol and highly successful musician and actor.

Joey: The loud mouth, self-proclaimed King of Free Runners, is barely into his teens and has an indomitable and fiery spirit.

Madi and Uche:  Two brothers who have made a name for themselves on the streets. Madi is the older brother, while Uche was a former bare knuckle boxing champion who retired from the sport prematurely for undisclosed personal reasons. Both are tough as nails and are always ready to get into a fight with anyone who threatens their friends and- more often than not- with each other.

The Nigerian Comic Book Showcase updates

Okay, I was hoping to have some artwork to go with this post, but I guess I will have to wait a bit longer.

I have finally decided to work on two titles. Killing Days and Pilot. I will submit Pilot for the competition aspect of the Nigerian Comic Book Showcase, and Killing Days I will just publish.

I have written a preview issue already that will feature in the Nigerian Comic Book Showcase and I am currently working on issue 1.

I have also finished the preview issue for Pilot which will feature of the Nigerian Comic Book Showcase as well.

So, what are they about?

Killing Days is a supernatural, noir action tale set in an alternate Lagos where airships ply the sky allowing those who can afford it to avoid the hellish traffic that has become part of the Lagos landscape. The mega city project is well under way and some areas would look a bit different from what they are now. With this as a backdrop, a tale of mystery, suspense and action will be told. The protagonsists of the comic are called the Days and they are group of supernatural creatures that look like human beings. They are all named after the days of the week and have a descriptor in front of their name that has something to do with their power and/or personality.

Pilot on the other hand takes place a bit farther in the future than Killing Days. In this future, a Nigerian archaeological team unwittingly triggered a series of events that could bring about the destruction of all life on the planet. There is only one thing that can stop this from happening, the Rio. A highy advanced piece of weaponry that can only be piloted by the first human it interfaces with. Lots of political wrangling, fears, and various intrigues and problems await the hero Joseph as he bears the fate of the world on his shoulders while also keeping tabs on what the American government is doing and avoiding being used as a tool for political relevance by the Nigerian government. This is my submission for the NCBS so I hope I can make it interesting enough for people to want to see more of it.

In other news, I have already received a few scripts for the NCBS from some of the writers I have spoken to.

Nigerian Comic Book Showcase

The Nigerian Comic Book Showcase is planned to be an online anthology series featuring the best in Nigerian Comic book stories. It will be available for free from this website and on facebook and other Nigerian online spaces.

The aim is twofold. To increase awareness of modern Nigerian comics and secondly to act as a sort of pilot. Spaceboy is going to publish one (more hopefully) of the comics in the anthology based on reader feedback as to which one they were most impressed by. Of course, this is not to say that the runners-up will be relegated to the bin, but in terms of priority, the story with the most votes will get the push to be published first.

So far, I have two stories I am submitting for it – Killing Days and Pilot – and I have spoken to a couple of writers and artists to submit their own stories as well. One title that I am really looking forward to getting into the showcase is Canary Seven. An action adventure series about kids in secret villages trained in the art of warrior soccer.

It is sort of like Naruto meets Winning Eleven. In other words, potentially an instant hit.

My script for Killing Days is done and clocks in at a respectable 25 pages which is the page limit for any story to be submitted. Pilot I thought I had finished, but I am not happy with it at the moment, will see what happens. If I get enough stories, will only submit one for the showcase and focus on publishing it separately myself under Spaceboy.
